Kraków wasn’t destroyed during the Second World War so it retained its wonderful historical old town and also has a Jewish Quarter. Kraków also has several interesting sites nearby, including the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the heart wrenching Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum.

Day Trip from Krakow: Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an easy day trip from Krakow. The mine is absolutely massive at 327m deep, with over 287 kms of tunnels spread over 9 levels. We visited chambers chiselled out of rock salt, chapels full of statues sculpted from salt, and amazing underground saline lakes. Nearby is also the Wieliczka Castle with its original defence walls.
